Período triste y sangriento de la historia argentina en la que el autor se pronuncia por extender la cultura europea y norteamericana en nuestro país y relata la brutal oposición de los caudillos regionales y su extrema ferocidad. Muy apreciable valor literario en la obra.
It is historical and gives a clear picture of the political struggles and interests at stake that were shaping the organization of the country in the turmoil of the civil wars of the early years of the institutional and political organization of Argentina. It gives a clear description of one of the most important "caudillos" (war lords) — Facundo Quiroga — and the battle between what the author considered civilization vs. barbarism.
Sarmiento describe los antecedentes genéticos de la población argentina, incluyendo sus bandos antagónicos envueltos en peleas inconducentes que recurrentemente han atentado contra la evolución de este magnífico país.
